Former England international striker James Beattie signed for Premier League strugglers Stoke on Monday from Championship side Sheffield United for a fee that could rise to 3.5million pounds on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Beattie - who previously played for Southampton and Everton - is the second player to be signed by Stoke as they battle to retain their place in the Premier League - they are presently fourth from bottom just one point above the drop.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis said he was delighted to have secured Beattie just days after he signed Matthew Etherington from West Ham. "James is a player who has a phenomenal goal-scoring record and I am delighted to have him here," boss Tony Pulis told the club website.

"He has averaged more than a goal every other game for Sheffield United, and he has a proven record of scoring in the top flight. We have signed two fantastic players in Matthew Etherington and James, but we are still looking for two or three more before the closure of the window."

Beattie said he was happy to be returning to the Premier League. "I've been brought up to score goals," said the 30-year-old. "The gaffer (manager) has been great with me, outlining what he wants me to do and what my role will be within the team.

"I'm definitely ready to give the Premier League another crack and I'm delighted with the opportunity. Stoke City have given me that and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do straight away."

Beattie joined Sheffield United from Everton in 2007 and scored 34 goals in 18 months for them.

Former Brazil forward Friaca, who scored in the 1950 World Cup final defeat by Uruguay, died on Monday.

The 84-year-old had been in the intensive care unit at the Sao Jose do Avai hospital in Itaperuna, about 240-km from Rio de Janeiro, for six weeks with pneumonia, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on its website (www.cbf.com.br).

The host nation's 2-1 defeat by Uruguay was a big shock. Brazil went into the final game of a four-team mini-league needing to draw to land the trophy, and were hot favourites after scoring 13 goals in their previous games against Spain and Sweden.

A record crowd estimated at more than 200,000 crammed into the Maracana stadium ready to celebrate and their optimism seemed justified when Friaca put them ahead early in the second half, his only goal in 13 international appearances.

Uruguay, though, hit back through Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia. Defender Juvenal is the only survivor from Brazil's team.

Friaca played for club sides Vasco da Gama, Sao Paulo and Ponte Preta. He spent most of his life in the small town of Porciuncula, in the state of Minas Gerais, where the municipal stadium is named after him.

This week we rolled out with the new patch, which included a new map and the event server. Though the event server has been implemented, there are currently no events available at this time as we need to continue testing and getting the kinks out.

Recently a few players have been having issues with connecting to the server. This was due to an issue on our side and was resolved by a quick restart of the servers. I have been getting reports of lag issues. We are aware of these issues and are looking for ways to improve them ourselves. However the best way for you as players to improve this on your own is to check the latency with players you are playing with when playing a game. Depending on the connection of the Host player and the other players in the room, latency or lag will be a factor in the game. My recommendation is to play with those whose location is closer to you but you are welcome to play with anyone. That is all for this week. Keep an eye out for next week’s recap.

Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed talks are taking place with Arsenal regarding a deal for Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin.

Arshavin has been looking to leave the UEFA Cup holders in search of a move to a major European league.

He impressed at Euro 2008 and was linked with Arsenal's North London rivals Tottenham, along with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, after the tournament.

However, in recent weeks speculation concerning a possible January move to Arsenal has increased after he was given permission to discuss his departure from Zenit.

Reports suggest Zenit are demanding a £20million fee for Arshavin, but the Gunners value the 27-year-old at considerably less.

Zenit, though, have told Sky Sports News that they are confident of agreeing a deal to sell the playmaker to Arsenal this month.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been looking to reinforce his squad after losing captain Cesc Fabregas for several months due to a knee injury.

Wenger has previously been coy on any interest in Arshavin, but admitted over the weekend that he was aiming to sign a player of 'special class'.

He also confirmed that availability for the knockout phase of the Champions League would not be an issue, with Arshavin unable to feature against Roma after appearing in the group stage for Zenit.

BOLTON, England (AP) - Brazilian World Cup winner Denilson could soon be playing in the English Premier League.

The 31-year-old forward, famous for his flamboyant dribbling skills and once the most expensive player in the world, is out of contract with Palmeiras and having a trial with Bolton.

Denilson was on the Brazil lineup that won the World Cup final 2-0 against Germany in 2002 although he only went on as an 89th-minute substitute for two-goal Ronaldo. He also played in the 1998 final when Brazil lost 3-0 to France.

He then spent seven season playing in Spain for Real Betis, who bought him from Sao Paolo in 1998 for a record fee of $32 million, before returning to his homeland.
